Can you trust someone that does not trust you? Can they trust you if you do not trust them?
My hypothesis is no on both counts. We show our trust, or lack of trust, in our behavior. As a wise man once told me: “We are not great actors. Therefore, we leak.” Our tells betray our feelings.
When we know that someone does not trust us, it causes us to wonder just how trustworthy that they are in return.
Therefore, someone must make the first move to develop a trusting relationship by extending trust. Extending trust is also the fastest way to repair trust in a broken relationship.
“Trust men and they will be true to you; treat them greatly and they will show themselves great.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Is this one of the principal reasons that people do not trust their senior leaders, because senior leaders do not trust them and the employees reciprocate in kind? Yes, that is my hypothesis. It is time to change that. Let’s get to work.
Just my opinion. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
