Vacations are important. They accrue such an amazing series of benefits.
Benefits include:
- Improved overall physical health
- Specifically improves your heart health
- Improved Mental health
- Great overall well being
- Better family relationships
- Reduces stress
- Reduced risk / instances of burnout
- Increased motivation
- Higher levels of happiness / lifts mood
- Increase your mindfulness
- Boosts creativity
- Less regret at the end of your life
Yet, one in four Americans doesn’t have access to paid time off. Of those that do, we use only 17 of the average 24 earned vacation days. A full 50% of American workers leave vacation time unused at the end of the year.
The action items are clear: Schedule a vacation right now, pick the dates, put the request in and start planning. Just the act of planning the vacation is part of the enjoyment and incurs many of the benefits.
If you are a company leader… let’s take this one more step. Which of the benefits listed above would not help to make your employees better employees? None of them! Encourage your employees to take all of their vacation time. Model the right behavior by taking / enjoying your own vacations. This is a win-win for everyone involved!
