It seems to me like Stephen Covey nailed it with this definition of leadership:
“Leadership is getting results in a way that inspires trust. It’s maximizing your current contribution and your ability to contribute in the future by establishing the trust that makes it possible.”
It is easy to get results in the short term. You can use a whip and a chair like a lion tamer. You could threaten and lie. However, you will not be able to sustain it.
Instead, sustainable leadership requires building trust through consistent behavior. It can be tempting to try to shortcut things. However, true long term success comes from doing it the right way.
