It used to be considered good enough to run a business to increase the value for shareholders.
However, I am with the proponents of Conscious Capitalism.
Businesses are best when they generate consistently great value for all stakeholders, including shareholders, customers, employees, partners, suppliers and the community. When everyone knows unequivocally that you are in it for their best interest… a business is unstoppable. It generates a solid team that is ready to go over the top to help each other succeed.
As Jim Collins put it, “The people we interviewed from good-to-great companies clearly loved what they did largely because they loved who they did it with.”
Why does it work so well? Sustainability, resilience, longevity, and fruitful relationships all come from a shared vision of wild success for everyone involved.
Running a business as a zero sum game where shareholders prosper at the expense of others in the ecosystem is not only wrong headed but unsustainable.
Just my opinion. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
