Taking Things Away from Employees

It is nearly always true that it is easier to give than to take away.  Leaders must keep this top of mind when making decisions.  How much easier is it?

There are some clues that can be found in the social sciences around loss aversion.  Studies have found that the sting of losing $100 has twice the impact of gaining a $100 windfall.  Therefore, we should roughly anticipate that a loss is twice as powerful as the gain.

Too often, I see a leader make a relatively small change to benefits or a rule change that takes aways some freedom / trust. Then, they seem surprised by the reaction of their employees.  You should never be surprised.  Treat taking things from employees with the caution that it deserves.

Just my opinion.  What do you think?  Let me know in the comments.
