There are few skills as foundational to success as your ability to solve problems. While there are many aspects of problem solving that must be mastered, thoroughly defining the problem to be solved is essential.
You can’t solve a problem quickly or thoroughly if you don’t thoroughly understand it.
Discipline yourself to hold back from jumping to solutions; engage your curiosity and gather all of the evidence available. Do not let a single bit of curiosity go unfulfilled. Who? What? Where? When? How?
Explain it to someone else, and let them help you to identify gaps in your knowledge. Then, go out there and gather more facts and evidence.
The more thoroughly you understand the problem the easier it is to solve and the more effective that you will be.
